12th May 2011 is the first day of the 74th Convocation for UiTM. On the day, His Royal Highness Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, UiTM Chancellor, inaugurated the convocation and also UiTM's new convocation hall, known as the Dewan Agong Tuanku Canselor (DATC). ASPRG group member, Nurlaila Ismail, received her MSc scroll on this day.

Everyday, everybody creates history. Yesterdays become repositories of many historical events that provide abundance knowledge for hindsight and tomorrows' outlooks. Many examples, inspirations and motivations can be obtained from yesterdays' events. The ASPRG, led by Siti Arpah, took the initiative in getting some history lessons into 'research' perspective by organising a very special seminar entitled 'Research Inspirations from the Conquest of Constantinople: Al Fateh'. Together with the Kelab Kebajikan FKE, the seminar was held at FKE on 26th April 2011. Below is a summary of the event, prepared by Siti Arpah.

Alhamdullillah program telah selamat di jalankan. Seramai 48 orang staf FKE dan 21 orang pelajar dari ASP Research group datang ke majlis ilmu tersebut. Secara rawak, separuh daripada hadirin tidak pernah mendengar tentang kisah Sultan Al-Fateh ini.

Ceramah bermula pada pukul 9 pagi dan acara diselang seli dengan preview video kepemimpinan Al-Fateh. Acara berakhir pada pukul 12 tengah hari. Secara keseluruhan, ceramah amat menarik. Penyelidikan yang di bawa dari kisah ini adalah menyeluruh dari ilmu politik, strategi ketenteraan, geografi, sains, kejuruteraan dan kekuatan keimanan yang tinggi terhadap kebenaran Hadis Nabi. Penceramah telah berjaya menarik perhatian para hadirin dengan paparan gambar-gambar 3D tempat tersebut (Istanbul sekarang) , peta, lakaran tembok dan preview video kisah itu. Kesemua buku tulisan beliau yang di bawa habis dijual. Kisah Kepemimpinan Al-Fateh berhasil memperkenalkan kehebatan sejarah Islam teragung melalui perpspektif yang baru dan mengujakan.

On Mon, 25th April 2011, one of our research lab, The Biomedical Research Laboratory for Human Potential, was honored with an official visit by The Faculty of Music, UiTM. The group included lecturers: Sharifah Faizah, Rita Mardhatillah and Nurulhamimi, led by the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr Ghaziah Mohd Ghazali. They were accompanying Prof. em. Dr. Wilfried Gruhn, University of Music (Musikhochschule) Freiburg, Germany. They were introduced to the lab and our current researches.

We had a very fruitful discussion on setting up collaborative research works relating to certain scientific evaluation of music. The proposal encompasses new qualitative and quantitative researches and possible intervention programs.

In continuing our effort for educating and motivating our members toward research of distinction, we invited another young PhD speaker, Dr Kamariah Noor Ismail, Postgraduate Coordinator, Faculty of Chemical Engineering, UiTM, to share her winning strategies in getting a good PhD. Below is a report of the session prepared by Nazre.

ASPRG March 2011 seminar had been successfully conducted on Tuesday, 28th March 2011 at Al-Haytam Seminar room, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The speaker invited was Yang Berusaha Puan Dr. Kamariah Noor binti Ismail, a senior lecturer at Faculty of Chemical Engineering, UiTM.

During her speech which lasted for almost 2 hours, Dr. Kamariah had enlighten the audience, comprising of ASPRG members and guests, with her wits mostly touching on her PhD experiences. Her talk covered from A to Z of her PhD life, starting from the interview session to obtain the scholarship until her viva and post-viva life. Throughout all the phases, she faced a lot of challenges but nevertheless she managed to tackle the obstacles and completing her PhD with flying colours.

In her sharing, Dr. Kamariah reminded all the participants to understand the concept of postgraduate life which rely on the “independent study”. Yet, the students must be alert with their surroundings which require them to interact with other entities such as supervisor, family, colleagues and peer researchers. She also prompted those who are studying under scholarship to treat PhD as an “AMANAH”, which needed to be catered with careful responsibility. Instead of talking about personal provision, Dr. Kamariah also shared several technical information such as thesis writing and file management.

Prof. Mohd. Nasir bin Taib, the Head of ASPRG, on his remarks, thanked and congratulated Dr. Kamariah for sharing her endeavors. According to him, Dr. Kamariah had proven that anybody could gain success in PhD when they have strong self-believed, passion and hard works.

93rd ASPRG Colloquium @ Fraser's Hill

A special colloquium and motivation seminar were organised at Pine Resort, Fraser's Hill, 18-20 Mar 2011. Group members, many took along their sons, daughters, mom, dad, etc., used the opportunities to be close to nature and temperate climate. During out first day there, it was raining all day long. The first night we listened to a motivation seminar on research. On Saturday morning, Dr Zakaria Hussain, Senior Lecturer of UiTM Pulau Pinang presented his experiences in doing research for his PhD. In the afternoon, members participated in some sporting events organised by the resort. At night, we have our colloquium which consisted of progress presentations and discussions for researches done in Mar. A lot of thanks and appreciations goes to Siti Arpah and Norizam for making the meeting a success!

Warming up our motivation and spirit for strong and successful researches this year, ASPRG organised our first workshop for 2011. The workshop, held on 16th Feb 2011, adopted the philosophy of success as proposed by Tommy Newberry in his popular book titled Success is Not an Accident. The workshop highlighted the 'exact science' underlying many advancements realised in the world today. Most of the times, the responsibility to choose success is 100% our own. Nurlaila, who completed her MSc recently, was invited to present her experiences as a case study for the workshop. Below is an excerpt of the report for the workshop prepared by Roshakimah.

Seramai 31 orang peserta telah menghadiri bengkel yang telah dianjurkan. Peserta adalah terdiri daripada ahli ASP Group, juruteknik, pembantu penyelidik, pensyarah dan juga pelajar daripada FKE. Para peserta amat berpuas hati dengan kandungan bengkel motivasi yang disampaikan oleh penceramah. Setiap panduan yang telah diberikan dapat dipraktiskan semasa menjalankan aktiviti penyelidikan dan pembelajaran.

Penaung ASP Group iaitu Prof. Dr. Nasir dari FKE yang berpengalaman luas dalam bidang penyelidikan telah berkongsi ilmu, pengalaman dan memberi panduan kepada para peserta yang hadir. Kebanyakan isi penyampaian beliau adalah dikupas daripada pembacaan beliau melalui buku yang berjudul Success Is Not an Accident oleh Tommy Newberry, 2007; intipatinya ialah No matter how you say it, success is not an accident. Peserta yang hadir disajikan dengan pelbagai perkongsian dan motivasi yang amat berguna dalam meneruskan proses penyelidikan dan pembangunan.

Tetapi tempoh selama setengah hari didapati kurang mencukupi kerana masih banyak lagi ilmu dan input yang boleh digarapkan kepada perserta. Selain dari tiu, bengkel seperti ini juga dicadangkan supaya diadakan di luar dari kawasan kampus untuk memberikan pendedahan yang berbeza kepada peserta. Ianya boleh diperbaiki menerusi aktiviti dan pengisian yang lebih berkesan.

OBJEKTIF

Objektif kursus RESEARCH CREATIVITY WORKSHOP telah tercapai dengan jayanya iaitu untuk memberi pendedahan bahawa kreativiti adalah pemangkin dalam melakukan kerja-kerja penyelidikan. Harapannya agar workshop ini akan memberi idea kepada para pelajar untuk menjadi lebih kreatif agar dapat meyiapkan kerja-kerja penyelidikan mereka dalam masa yang yang telah ditetapkan.

Penyampai iaitu Prof. Dr. Mohd. Nasir bin Taib telah berkongsi pengalaman beliau sendiri dalam mencapai kejayaan sehinga berjaya mendapat PhD dalam masa 3 tahun. Selain itu beliau juga memperkenalkan strategi-strategi kreatif daripada ramai pakar-pakar motivasi yang mempunyai kejayaan tersendiri seperti Jim Rohn, Anthony Robin and Bob Proctor. Dan yang paling menarik ialah, Prof telah membawa kami sama-sama menonton filem bertajuk Peaceful Warrior. Sebelum menonton kami telah diberikan slide mengandungi kata-kata motivasi bagaimana untuk mencapai kejayaan walaupun pelbagai rintangan yang ada. Filem ini amat berkesan kerana ia memberi contoh yang jelas dan menarik untuk memempuh rintangan dalam apa saja yang kita lakukan.

RESPON PESERTA
Seramai 30 orang peserta telah hadir (termasuk Prof). Peserta amat berpuas hati dan gembira sekali kerana mendapat pendedahan yang begitu berharga. Kepuasan hati peserta dibuktikan dengan minat untuk menghadiri lagi program seumpama ini.

Time passes so quickly, as quick as just another page on this blog! Since the last entry, a year has passed. There are many excuses and many reasons that can be put forward for not updating the blog. However, the most important thing is that, for almost all circumstances, many lessons can be learned from the past and they can be put to good use in planning for the future.

Many activities had been organised by the ASPRG for 2010 - these past events will be looked in retrospective and progressively blogged as backdated issues. 2010 has been another successful year for the group; this includes organising many meetings, seminars and training workshops, participation in national and international exhibitions and conferences, and of course research paper publications. Group members had a lot of fun and exciting moments!

The main event marking our end of year was the 2010 Control, Signal and Image Processing (CSIP) Research Seminar, held at Janda Baik, Pahang, 17-19 December 2010 . Follows are pictures taken during the seminar.

ASPRG invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azina, from Universiti Malaya, to present a seminar titled 'Multivariate analysis of the categorical data' on 28th Oct 2009.

Almost all of us apply certain degree of statistics in our data processing to produce a more meaningful observation from our experimental results. It was very appropriate to have an expert in the area to share with us her experiences and guide us on the proper application of statistics. Some of the subjects covered by the talk were: regression and categorical variable, conceptual framework, causal relationship, types of data and logistic regressions. More interestingly, Dr Azina demonstrated many examples to highlight the concepts and applications of statistics.

Research is a special endeavor pursued by many, especially academicians and of course researchers. There are many facets of research motivations and one of the major factors is to find the ‘truth’. But, for those with a short term goal of getting a postgraduate degree, MSc or PhD, indulging in research toward advancing knowledge is minimally sufficient!

As a postgraduate student, a good and significant research is central to a PhD. There are certain traits that characterizes a 'good' PhD. There is a saying 'what is important is the journey, not the destination', and this is really true in pursuing an adequate and substantial PhD. The journey towards the final destination (PhD) is actually an embodiment of practice, focus, discipline, perseverance, commitment, diligent, passion and patient. At the end of a successful PhD, a ‘new’ knowledge will be established. Prior to that, this ‘new’ knowledge is not in existence. This fact defines the ‘difficulty’ in pursuing a PhD and it boils down to the question of ‘how can one establish certain ‘experiment’ to accomplish the ‘new’ knowledge?! In many instances, PhD students were frustrated, beleaguered, de-motivated and some even may gave up, when and after they discussed their PhD work with colleagues and also experts. This is due to negative remarks, or misunderstanding (of the researcher), especially about the ‘impossibilities’ of the research. Some of the common comments are: ‘this is not done before’, ‘nobody has done it this way’, ‘there is no such study before’, etc. On the contrary, these comments should be considered as good motivations as they indicate that the proposal has a high potential to hit ‘new’ knowledge’ and there are gaps in the current knowledge domain!

It should be realized that, when starting out, usually, the only (two) persons who knew the details of a proposed PhD research were its researcher and supervisor; others may be playing guessing games as to the possibility and extent of the proposal. They should be the ones that have a ‘strong’ believe that their proposed research will be generating new knowledge. Other peoples’ comments and ideas should be weight out appropriately before being used to influence the research.

For this year, so far five ASPRG group members had successfully completed their research and defended their thesis. These are:

It is the fasting month once again for the muslim. In Malaysia, Ramadan (1430 Hijri) started on Sat 22 Aug and is expected to last until Sat 19 Sep 2009. One of the highlights, beside religous duties,night supplications, prayers, charities, etc, is of course food.This calls my attention to browse our picture collections looking for 'food'! And here are some of them - photos from (a) outing to Kak Shimah Restaurant, on top of a fishing pond in Kepong, 14 Jul 09, after the full day workshop session earlier in the day, (b) Mee Udang, Sg. Training Workshop

On 14th Jul 2009, ASPRG organized a Training workshop.The objective was to impart skills in brainstorming, creativity, group work and bonding. Members were divided into 8 groups of three. Using a crude/raw and limited resources, each group was assigned to design and build a simple yet elegance and strong shopping bag.

The Advanced Signal Processing Research Group (ASPRG) is established at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia. It groups researchers supervised by Prof Nasir. The group is active in carrying out researches in areas such as signal processing, intelligent system, system modeling, process control, control system, image processing and biomedical system.
